HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 8, 2008) – As part of his “Capital For A Day” in Hagerstown, Governor Martin O’Malley today announced Washington County will receive 11 new buses for its local transit system, Washington County Commuter Service. Funding for the new buses is provided through Maryland’s Locally Operated Transit Systems grant program. These new buses will allow the local system to replace nearly half of its aging 23-vehicle transit fleet. Washington County Commuter Service provides 338,000 trips a year.
“These new buses are crucial to providing dependable service to the Washington County residents that count on transit every day to get to work, school and entertainment,” said Governor O’Malley. “Every day, we are focused on how to preserve our existing transportation network, from investing in these new bus replacements and MARC to upgrading our bridges and highways across Maryland.”
The first nine buses will be delivered later this year. They are part of a $19 million contract approved by the Board of Public Works in March to purchase 72 new buses that will go to local transit systems statewide. The final two buses will be delivered by Summer 2009. Washington County Commuter Service is providing a 10% funding match.
