(Baltimore, MD) May 2, 2008 – The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is advising that Light Rail customers may experience delays and crowding due to a necessary, short-term maintenance program. Following the failure of a wheel assembly on a single Light Rail vehicle, MTA has increased its inspections of the remainder of the fleet to determine if such an issue is present on any other train.
As trains are inspected and found to meet operating standards, they will be returned to active service. As a result, customers will see improved service on the system with each passing day.
This short-term maintenance program must be performed at a time when a portion of the Light Rail vehicle fleet is already out of service for a planned mid-life overhaul. As a result, MTA is operating with a smaller fleet than usual and customers may experience overcrowding and delays over the next several weeks.
In order to provide trains for the main line, Light Rail service has been suspended on the rail shuttle line operating between Penn Station and Camden Station. Shuttle bus service will be available between Penn Station and Mt. Royal Station where customers may transfer to main line trains.
MTA maintenance personnel are working overtime to complete the maintenance and return trains to service and reduce inconvenience created by this situation.
