BALTIMORE, MD - The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) was selected as the 2008 Employer Services Organization Achievement Award Winner by Commuter Connections, a regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. Commuter Connections recognized the MTA as the lead agency that manages the Maryland Commuter Tax Credit Program.
“The MTA thanks all of the businesses that have decided to support and encourage their employees to use alternative transportation,” said Governor O’Malley. “By using mass transit and sharing rides, we can improve the environment, reduce gridlock, and make our communities more livable.”
Maryland’s Commuter Tax Credit Program is by far the most generous program of its kind for employers in the country. It encourages Maryland companies to set up rideshare programs at the workplace that help to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and conserve energy.
The Maryland Commuter Tax Credit Program, which began in 1999, is an added incentive from the State of Maryland to encourage employers to get involved with setting up alternative commute programs for their employees. On average, since 2000, 18 employers each year from the Washington, DC metropolitan region have registered for the tax credit. And on average, 950 employees have enjoyed the benefits of participation in a company alternative commute program from the same region. On June 25, Commuter Connections will recognize the Maryland Department of Transportation and the MTA for outstanding service in the Maryland business community at an awards ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
