MARC POPULARITY IN MAY INCREASES WITH GAS PRICES
Penn Line records highest average daily ridership this year

(BALTIMORE, MD) – The average daily ridership on MARC trains in May was 32,604,  a 6.0% increase over May 2007.  This marked the fifth time since January that average daily ridership has exceeded 30,000.

“We are pleased that our MARC train riders view the service as a viable alternative to driving, especially as we continue to experience rising costs associated with driving,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, MTA Administrator.

The Penn Line, operated by Amtrak, runs between Perryville and Washington, DC via Baltimore and BWI Airport. It was MARC’s most traveled line in May with an average of 20,414 daily boardings, reflecting a 4.3% increase and the highest average daily ridership since April. The Brunswick Line, which is operated by CSX and takes riders from West Virginia through Frederick and Montgomery counties into Washington, was second with an average of 7,724 daily boardings, and experienced an 8.2% increase. The Camden Line, also operated by CSX, runs from Baltimore to Washington and recorded a 10.9% gain, and was third with 4,466 average daily boardings.

MARC Train service operates a 203-mile, 42-station system serving Washington, DC, Baltimore City, seven Maryland counties and parts of northeastern West Virginia.
