The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT)’s State Highway Administration (SHA) recently approved ICC Constructors (IC3) to start work on the second segment of the Intercounty Connector (ICC), beginning with design and field investigations. IC3 will design and build approximately four miles of the ICC from west of US 29 to east of I-95, including the complex interchanges at US 29 and I-95. Additionally, the contract includes approximately two miles of construction of auxiliary lanes along I-95.
“As we begin work on the second section of the ICC, which spans both Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, the project remains on time and on budget,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary John D. Porcari. “With this step, we continue to fuel the strong momentum behind the ICC so that we can deliver a safer, more reliable route between these two counties that will reduce traffic congestion on local roads.”
The ICC is being constructed in five segments, with construction already underway in the first segment, “Contract A” from I-270/I-370 to MD 97, in Montgomery County. The second segment, “Contract C,” is a $513.9 million contract awarded to the IC3 Joint Venture, comprised of the Shirley Contracting Company, LLC; Clark Construction Group, LLC; Guy F. Atkinson Construction, LLC; Facchina Construction Company, Inc. and Trumbull Corporation. IC3, of Bethesda, Md., has extensive construction experience in the greater Washington, D.C. area.
Some of IC3's early activities, which will be visible to the public starting in a few weeks, may include: Field investigation of site conditions Geotechnical investigations of soil conditions Engineering survey work through-out the project Field investigation and location of utilities
“By giving the green light to start work on the second segment of the ICC, we are taking another major step toward delivering this critical connection to the Maryland public,” said State Highway Administrator Neil J. Pedersen. “The initial activities will lay the groundwork for the major construction expected to start in the spring.”
The first seven-mile segment of the ICC is scheduled to be complete late 2010/early 2011, while the ICC segments east of Georgia Avenue are slated to open late 2011/early 2012. For more information on the Intercounty Connector, call toll free at 866-462-0020 or visit www.iccproject.com.
