(Baltimore, MD) April 11, 2008 – A suspect wanted in a North Carolina bank robbery was arrested by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Police yesterday during a routine security sweep of the North Linthicum Light Rail Stop. The suspect failed to produce a valid fare ticket during a fare inspection and was subsequently apprehended. Prior to issuing a citation to the suspect, the police officer conducted a warrant check that revealed an outstanding arrest warrant.
“Our police force, like other law enforcement agencies across the nation, works very hard at protecting our modes, customers and the community at large,” said Colonel David Franklin, MTA Chief of Police. “It is often in the course of our pursuit of nuisance crimes, that serious offenders are exposed. When this happens, it is a win for both the public and the law enforcement community.”
The MTA uses both sworn officers and fare inspectors to reduce fare evasion. All Light Rail riders must have a ticket or pass at all times and may receive a citation if they cannot prove they have paid the fare.
