MTA HOSTS EARTH DAY CELEBRATION
Environmentally-friendly transit options, entertainment, other agencies will be featured

(Baltimore, MD) – The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will celebrate Earth Day with invited State and local elected officials on Tuesday, April 22 from 11 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the pavilion area of Power Plant Live in Downtown Baltimore. The MTA will exhibit a hybrid bus along with other environmentally-friendly information. Demonstrations on the use of MTA’s bus-mounted bicycle racks will be provided throughout the celebration. The MTA will be joined by other organizations including the State Highway Administration, One Less Car, Baltimore Green Week, National Aquarium in Baltimore, Baltimore Metropolitan Council, Chesapeake Sustainable Business, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, American Red Cross, Civic Works, Aetna and Parks and People. Local performers will entertain.

“There’s never been a greater environmental need than now to use public transportation,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, MTA Administrator.  “Our customers have more reasons than ever to try transit, from the rising costs of fuel to the convenient options of Bus, Light Rail, Metro Subway, MARC and Mobility.”

A single MTA bus can remove as many as 45 automobiles from the highway.  Hybrid buses improve air quality by reducing particulate matter by up to 90 percent, decrease fuel usage by more than 20 percent, improve reliability and enhance customer comfort. A single MARC train can remove as many as 975 automobiles from the highway. MTA’s Light Rail and Metro Subway systems are powered electrically, providing riders with scenic views of many Baltimore communities.  The public is invited to take Metro Subway to the Shot Tower/Marketplace Station.
