BALTIMORE, MD – The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has identified its maintenance employee who was fatally struck at approximately 2 p.m. today on southbound Interstate 95 at Gunpowder Falls. Gregory Anthony Bauer, 37, of Abingdon, Md., was a facility maintenance technician who worked on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway.
MDTA Chairman and State Transportation Secretary John D. Porcari released the following statement regarding the death of Mr. Bauer:
“Today’s loss comes in the midst of National Work Zone Safety Week. This afternoon we saw proof that the men and women who maintain our highways risk their lives each and every day. A tragedy like this requires that each one of us stop and think about how we drive and what we can do to create a safer environment on the road. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those loved ones who lost a very special person today.”
Mr. Bauer was clearing debris from the left shoulder of southbound I-95 when the driver of a Mazda passenger vehicle apparently lost control and struck him. Mr. Bauer later was pronounced dead at Franklin Square Hospital.
A two-year Authority employee, Mr. Bauer is survived by his wife, Stacey, and a 11-year old son and 9-year old daughter.
Southbound I-95 was closed at mile marker 70 from approximately 2 to 5 p.m. Motorists were detoured via Exit 74 (MD 152) to US 40 during the closure. In addition, northbound I-95 was closed at various points during this time.
