MARYLAND CHAPTER WINS THREE NATIONAL AWARDS

Conference of Minority Transportation Officials
Salute Maryland Chapter for Superior Commitment

(BALTIMORE, MD) – The Maryland Chapter of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), under the direction of Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Director of Customer Information Kenneth Duvall Chapman, recently won three national awards at the COMTO national conference in Miami, Florida.

The Maryland Chapter was recognized in the categories of:

  • Best Multi-Modal Recruitment Activities Award, a category that recognizes chapters who have increased membership by recruiting new members outside of the transportation industry. The Maryland Chapter recruited 62 new members this year.

  • Best Recruiter, Kenneth Duvall Chapman, COMTO president and MTA director of customer information, recruited over 100 members to COMTO, the highest number achieved this year.

  • Executive of theYear, J. Keith Scroggins, COMTO immediate past president, an award designed to honor transportation policy makers and executives for demonstrating leadership and supporting the work of COMTO locally and nationally.

“I am proud of the awards that the Maryland Chapter of COMTO received and am grateful for the support during the year from the Maryland Department of Transportation and our city, county and private sector partners,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld, MTA Administrator.  “This recognition demonstrates our commitment to minorities and women in transportation.”

COMTO has increased its membership by nearly 50% in the past year. The Maryland Chapter, with 250 members, is the largest in the nation and the fastest growing chapter in COMTO.

MTA senior management joined Maryland COMTO Chapter members in leading workshops and presentations at the national conference in the areas of Multi-Modal relationships, effective traffic control, and meeting the needs of local communities.

Founded on the campus of Howard University in 1971, COMTO’s mission is to provide senior minority transportation officials a forum to discuss and raise government awareness on relevant issues at the local, state, and national levels, nationwide.
