MENDEZ PRESENTS PRESIDENT'S AWARDS TO STATE DOT LEADERS AND CREWS

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) President Victor Mendez, Director of the Arizona Department of Transportation, presented President's Awards to the following state transportation teams and individuals at a ceremony during the AASHTO annual meeting on September 30. Administration

The award for Administration went to the Texas International Registration Plan Team at the Texas Department of Transportation for its dynamic, web-based motor carrier registration system.

Newly named Texas DOT Director Amadeo Saenz accepted the award on behalf of the team. Team members include: Ann Parker, Barbara Ashcraft, Barbara Walters, Bob Tanner, Bobby Johnson, Brent Englehardt, Brian Kalstad, Bryan Phillips, Carol Rogers, Chema Sanchez, Cindy Gendron, Conrad Muńoz, Deb Austin, Debbie Foust, Diana Napier, Doris Knight, Felicia Picker, Jerrie Whipple, Joan Minton, Joey Matesic, John Furman, John Poole, Johnny Manns, Julie Denniston, Karen Moore, Karen Wood, Kathy Garrett, Kip Thomas, Lois Johnson, Luis Perez, Mark Reyes, Michael Kieke, Reuben Patschke, Rilene Hubbard, Robin Sievert, Roy Mills, Sasha Russell, Terri Housworth, Tobe Hubbard and Yuning Lin.

Aviation

Craig Ide of the Utah Department of Transportation's Division of Aeronautics took home the Aviation Award for his improvements to airport pavement maintenance recordkeeping.

Environment
 
The Henry's Lake Fish Passages Project Team from the Idaho Department of Transportation was recognized for its work in saving the Yellowstone cutthroat trout population when its spawning passages were eroded. Team member Dave Walrath, Project Development Engineer, accepted the award. Team members include: Curtis Cannon, Gary Vecellio, John Hoenhe, Lee Mabey, Mike Homza, Tim Cramer, Marv Hoyt, Chuck Winder, Tom Cole, Terry Blau, Damon Keane, Ryan Day, Scott Christensen, Tony Graham, Steve Trafton and Tony Williams.

Highways

The Colorado Department of Transportation claimed the Highway prize for its efforts in reconstructing State Highway 67 after a powerful rainfall flooded part of the roadway.

Colorado DOT Chief Engineer Pamela Hutton accepted the award on behalf of the Highway 67 team. Members of the team included: Dale Weaver, Scott Brace, Bob Wilson, Yun Han, Cindy Smith, Randy Johnson, Gary Bazanele, Davis Smith, Wayne Trujillo, Gary Heller, Darrel Taylor, Keith Flowerdew, Carl Valdez, Dave Poling, Christine Genger, Rudy Sipnefski, Mark Andrew, Tom Mcghghy and Tim Harris.

Highway Traffic Safety

The President's Award for Highway Traffic Safety was accepted by Utah Department of Transportation Traffic and Safety Director Robert Hull. He was behind the department's successful "Zero Fatalities" program.

Planning

The planning award was accepted by the Colorado Department of Transportation and its I-25 High Occupancy Vehicle/Tolled Express Lanes Project Team for work to relieve the stress of traffic congestion for Denver's commuters with the high occupancy toll lane project.

Peggy Catlin, Colorado DOT Deputy Executive Director, accepted the award on behalf of the team. Other members included: Steve Sperry, Bob Marusin, Pam Hutton, Roy Smith, Stacey Stegman, Randy Jensen, Mindy Crane and Leela Rajasekar.

Public Transportation

The Public Transportation Award went to the Florida Department of Transportation team of Leroy Edwards, Cecil Carter, Elizabeth Stutts, Robert Westbrook and Paul Johnson for the Florida Vehicle Procurement Program.

Marion Hart, the state Public Transportation and Modal Administrator for Florida DOT, accepted the award.

Quality

The President's Transportation Award for Quality went to the members of the Highway Improvement Team from the Wyoming Department of Transportation, for their major improvement work along the historical Togwotee Trail to Yellowstone route while balancing the needs of wildlife and the natural environment with those of the traveling public.

Shelby Carlson, Wyoming DOT District Engineer, accepted the award on behalf of the team, which included: Bob Bonds, Cody Beers, Kaia Tharp, Keith Compton, Lyle Lamb and Sandy Pecenka.

Rail Transportation

There are two winners in the President's Transportation Award for Rail Transportation category this year. They were the Florida Department of Transportation's state Safety Oversight Document Management Team of Mike Johnson, Wayne Carter and Shaun Martin for rail fixed-guideway systems.

Marion Hart, the state Public Transportation and Modal Administrator for Florida DOT, accepted the award.

The second recipient of the President's Transportation Award for Rail Transportation was Missy Cassidy, Director of the Office of Policy and Government Affairs from the Maryland Department of Transportation. She was recognized for her knowledge and leadership in rail issues, on both a regional and national level.

Research

Jim McMinimee, Director of Project development for the Utah Department of Transportation, accepted the Research Award for his research into accelerated bridge construction.
