HANOVER, MD - Transportation Secretary John D. Porcari today announced a partnership between the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Baltimore County Public Library to help establish a 20-year vision for the State's transportation system. Beginning Monday, October 22, patrons accessing the Internet through the Baltimore County library computers will be encouraged to complete a brief on-line survey to help the State update its long-range Maryland Transportation Plan (MTP). This partnership with Baltimore County is a pilot program, and MDOT will continue to reach out to other county library systems as well.
"This partnership with the Baltimore County Public Library is a wonderful opportunity to engage people who might not otherwise give us their input on transportation planning," said Secretary Porcari. "What we hear from people will help us set the course for future statewide transportation decisions in Maryland."
The Baltimore County Public Library has formatted its computers to direct all Internet users to the MTP survey before routing them to the Internet. Immediately upon clicking on the Internet icon, users will be directed to the usual security disclosure page, then the MTP survey, and then to the Internet after they submit the survey online. The MTP establishes a 20-year vision for transportation in Maryland and helps guide statewide improvements across all means of transportation, including highways, roads, tunnels, bridges, trains, buses, water ports, airports, bike paths and sidewalks.
MDOT updates the MTP every five years to address current and future transportation challenges, needs and conditions. The MTP provides policy direction through statewide multi-modal goals and objectives. Through the partnership with the Baltimore County Public Library, MDOT will gather public opinions to create a plan that reflects and responds to Maryland's residents, businesses, local governments and communities.
The on-line survey also will be available through any Internet connection, 24-hours a day on MDOT's planning site at www.mdot.state.md.us/Planning.
MDOT is conducting extensive public outreach to engage citizens, agencies, and interested organizations to help revise the long-range vision, goals and objectives of the MTP. If you would like more information about the MTP, please contact Ron Spalding by email at mtpupdate2@mdot.state.md.us.
