Baltimore, MD (June 21, 2007)--The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) today unveiled a new summer campaign aimed at encouraging the use of public transportation during the second annual national Dump the Pump Day event in front of a bus shelter at City Hall. Today's nationwide celebration of public transit is designed to remind riders why they are riding public transit and to encourage new riders to try transit.
"The first day of summer is the perfect time to join with other transit agencies around the country in the Second Annual National Dump The Pump Day - and a great opportunity for the MTA to launch its summer campaign," said Paul J. Wiedefeld, MTA Administrator. "Our new campaign, directed at all car commuters in the Baltimore area, encourages the use of public transportation and uncovers the benefits of conserving gas, reducing maintenance costs of personal vehicles and helping the environment. The main focus of the campaign is to educate potential customers that round trip travel on the MTA is almost cheaper than a single gallon of gas. Gas prices are projected to cross the $4.00 per gallon threshold during the travel-heavy summer months and the MTA offers an affordable alternative to driving."
The integrated media campaign will be executed through billboard advertisements, radio, transit and in movie theatres. Dump the Pump Day is sponsored by the American Public Transit Association (APTA) and is a public awareness day that emphasizes the environmental benefits of using public transportation.
