ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 23, 2007) - Governor Martin O'Malley today announced that he will continue Maryland's time-honored tradition of hosting the Bay Bridge Walk. The event will be held Sunday, May 6. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MdTA) organizes the Walk.
"I am thrilled to be able to continue this special event for Maryland's citizens and visitors," said Governor O'Malley. "This family-friendly walk is an opportunity for young and old alike to experience the bridge and the Chesapeake Bay from a vantage point that is not usually available. The Bay Bridge Walk is a unique way to enjoy our State's most valuable natural resource."
About 20,000 attended the first Walk on April 27, 1975, when a Boy Scout leader in Towson, Md., asked then-Governor Marvin Mandel if his troop could walk across the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge while it was closed for maintenance. The 4.3-mile Walk has attracted as many as 50,000 walkers, some of whom travel across the country to participate.
"The first Sunday in May means Bay Bridge Walk," said Transportation Secretary and Authority Chairman John D. Porcari. "While most walkers live in the mid-Atlantic region, participants joined the event last year from as far west as California, Washington and Oregon. We even have individuals who travel from overseas." Specific details regarding the event will be accessible soon at www.baybridge.com.
