For Immediate Release:  August 13, 2007

NEW COMMUTER BUS PARK & RIDE LOT OPENS IN LAPLATA
277-space parking lot served by two express bus routes to Washington

(BALTIMORE, MD) -- A new Commuter Bus Park & Ride was opened today by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA). Southern Maryland residents using Washington-bound Commuter Bus Routes #901 and #907 can now park in the facility located on MD 925 (Washington Avenue) and Heritage Green Parkway in LaPlata.

The 277-space lot provides more than five times the number of parking spaces now available nearby. The additional spaces will allow both the #901 and #907 commuter buses to stop in the same location which increases options for riders. Prior to the opening of the new lot the buses stopped in different locations.

"The LaPlata Park & Ride is an investment in the future of Southern Maryland. By providing convenient, reliable transportation for commuters we are addressing congestion and giving residents new choices about how they travel to work," said MTA Administrator Paul J. Wiedefeld. "We are pleased to provide this enhanced level of service to our riders."

The parking lot provides five standard handicapped-accessible parking spaces and two van-accessible spaces as well as waiting shelters, lighting, and sidewalks. Permanent lighting fixtures will replace temporary lighting in coming weeks, and additional landscaping will be installed during the Spring 2008 planting season. Through an agreement with MTA, the lot will be maintained by Charles County.

Construction began in August 2006 and was completed this month by Peak Inc. Contractors. The total project cost was $5.75 million. The MTA has provided commuter bus service from LaPlata to Washington since the mid-1990's. Service is currently provided by Keller Transportation, Inc. under contract to MTA. The #901 and the #907 routes combined have more than 1,300 daily boardings on 25 roundtrips with the morning departures between 4:24 AM and 6:49 AM and the evening arrivals between 1:54 PM and 8:07 PM.

Fares on the #901 and the #907 are as follows:
