Types of Careers Opportunities at MDOT

There are several types of career opportunities available at the Maryland Department of Transportation. They are listsed below.  Please click here to visit our Online Employment Center.

  • Career Service Positions
    Career service is intended to facilitate a career commitment. Employees hired for career service positions are hired from a competitive list of eligibles resulting from a formal examination process. Upon satisfactory completion of a required probation period, employees may only be terminated for cause.
  • Executive Service Positions
    These are positions that staff a significant policy role; require expert, unique, or specialized training or qualifications to which career service procedures do not apply or are not practical; or provide direct staff support to the offices of the modal administrators. Employees hired in executive service positions are selected based on their experience and other relevant qualifications for the position. Employees serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
  • Contractual Positions
    These are positions whose conditions of employment and compensation are specified in a personal services contract. Employees hired for contractual positions are hired based on their qualifications. Contract employees do not receive leave or other fringe benefits.
  • Temporary Positions
    These are positions whose length of employment is for a specific period of time not to exceed 12 months or the limits established under a special employment program. Temporary employees do not receive leave or other fringe benefits. They serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and receives only cash compensation.
  • Commission Plan
    Commission plan employees are appointed to positions comparable to private industry and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority. The compensation method is based on accepted private sector practices to include a base salary plus commissions earned by achieving goals that relate to additional sales volume or enhanced net revenues.
  • Emergency Employees
    These are positions which are appointed on an emergency basis. Employees serve only for a period not to exceed 90 days and receive only cash compensation.
